Yet another miracle of God

Immediately after the failed attack on Trump, evangelicals, Adventists and other Christians tumbled over each other to proclaim that Trump was saved by God. Why? Because Trump has a divine mission to fulfill, of course, and for that he obviously has to stay alive. We have known for thousands of years now that religious people interpret all events, prosperity and disasters, in their own lane, but the complacent laziness with which this is done every time still amazes me. Ik moet nu denken aan Jezus. Who was on earth, as he himself proclaimed in the gospels, to fulfill a divine mission: he was to establish the kingdom of God on earth. When his mission ended in failure, and he died on the cross, his followers suddenly began proclaiming that it was Jesus’ divine mission to stay alive precisely not, unlike Trump. “No, he had to die, because his death on the cross was a deliberate and pre-planned sacrifice to redeem mankind from its sins and thus pave the way for the kingdom of God on earth.” That God’s kingdom has not come even two thousand years after Jesus’ death, we won’t talk about that for a moment. “Patience, hush, wait.”

Back to Trump. Should he be killed in a subsequent attack, presumably the Jesus variant will be chosen: Trump’s death is then a sacrifice, and Trump a martyr for the good cause, whichever that may be.

In short, no matter what happens, the believer always manages to spin it so that everything “makes sense” again. If you are doing well, this proves that God’s blessing is on you. If there is disaster, then you have sinned, and you must see the disaster as divine punishment. If the Titanic sinks and you are one of the few who manage to clamber into a lifeboat, it still shows that God saved you. That 90% of those on board drown under dire circumstances, and thus are not saved at all, I am sure God must have had a purpose in doing so. “After all, God is always right, and he is so much smarter than we are, that we should not be so arrogant as to think we understand him. After all, God’s ways are unfathomable.”

In short, the believer is always right. Everything is evidence of God’s will. This way of thinking, unfortunately still very dominant in large parts of the world, is a brake on human progress.
